After a student has received admission in the desired university, comes the most important stage, that of obtaining a visa. This may be the last, but most essential step in studying abroad. The visa is what actually decides whether a student will be able to pursue his/her studies further.
A student visa is the permission granted to a student to go to a particular country to study. After the stipulated period of study they are expected to return to their home country. Different countries have different visa procedures and regulations. It is important that the students get maximum information before applying.   All students applying for a US visa have to appear for an interview; whereas only some students may be selected for an interview while applying for a visa to the UK, Canada or Australia.

Irrespective of the country, the following are certain important pointers that should be kept in mind for student visa:

• Be aware that the interview will be conducted in English and not in your native language.
• Do not bring parents or family members with you to your interview. The visa authorities want to interview you, not your family.
• Know why you have enrolled in a particular program/ course. You will need to successfully verbalize the reasons as to why you have chosen a specific field of study to convince the visa authorities.
• Answer the questions clearly and precisely. The interviewing officers are under tremendous time constraints and therefore you have to make a good impression FAST!
• Remember that your main purpose of applying for the visa is to study abroad. You should be able to convince the authorities of your intent to return home. You may be asked for evidence that   you are leaving behind possessions, property or family members as an incentive for eventual return. It is also helpful if there is proof that there is a job waiting at home after graduation.

While going for a visa interview ensure that you carry the following documents:
Passport

    • Original passport, valid for at least six months after your interview date.

Proof of admission:

• Carry and submit proof of acceptance to an accredited academic program. \

• You should carry your  relevant certificates, academic  transcripts,  language proficiency   (TOEFL/IELTS) score report  and score reports  of other relevant

exams (GRE/ GMAT/SAT, etc)

• Prove that you have the skills necessary to successfully complete the course enrolled for.

Proof of Sufficient Funds:

• Applicants must prove that they have enough funds (cash, fixed deposits, property, and jewelry) to support their tuition, health insurance, and living expenses. At the time of applying, a student must have enough cash on hand to cover all first year expenses.
• Applicants must also be able to show a reliable source of money available to pay for subsequent years. This can be done by having parents or other close relatives give a written undertaking to finance the education and submit proof of their financial resources. All related documents (sponsor’s bank statement, IT returns, etc) will need to be submitted.

Sometimes, even though you have done your very best, your visa is rejected. Take heart and maintain a positive attitude. Do not engage in an argument with the visa officer. Instead, ask if the refusal can be overcome by bringing in any other documents, and try to get the reason for denial in writing.
